Why would you want to pay double the cost for classes at a university that you can get at a community college for less?

It took me four years to finally graduate from PPSC because I was a single mom working a job. I hardly had time to study but utilized the resources I had to help me with homework like TRIO and DSSS. I took advantage of tutoring sessions and I practically lived in the Math center! I received help from the Child Development Center. So, I was able to study, attend club meetings, maybe workout at the school gym and have time to grab my kids and eat dinner with them.

In the Army, I learned cooking for a lot of people, hospital style, following recipes. PPSC taught me about plating presentation, flavor profile, how to develop my own creativity. I really learned to hone my craft. And I gained so many mentors. There’s always someone better who has something to teach you.

I discovered what graphic design really was. The thing about a creative career is you discover things you didn’t even know existed. All of a sudden, you’re like ‘Wow, this is amazing.

My favorite experiences at PPSC would be taking the Student Success Class, which helped my transition from the army, and joining Black Student Union, Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Beta Lambda. Each club brought its own sense of community to community college.

Most of the people who work here, they don’t leave here. They retire from here. That says a lot about the school itself. It’s fantastic.

The camaraderie at Pikes Peak can be compared to the type of family environment I enjoyed as a law enforcement officer. PPSC wants to see the students and their fellow coworkers succeed. You are recognized for your achievements by your coworkers and administration alike.

You get real-life experience. We took a field trip to an architectural firm and we got to see their work from the inside and how it fits with what we’re studying.

I think the only way to have a really good experience in school, to really succeed, is to have personal connections. [My PPSC coach] has been that connection. He's helped me get ready for classes. He's been amazing. And he's also helped me build more relationships at the college.

We go to the Military and Veterans Center because it’s a whole new world for us. We’re not only entering the civilian world again, we’re entering the world of students, which is a double transition. At the Vet Center they help out a whole lot. They’re pretty awesome over there.

As a working adult in the midst of a career shift, I was nervous there would not be an educational program to fit my schedule. I was more than thrilled when I enrolled in PPSC's Computer Information Systems Programming Certificate, because it allowed me the flexibility of online or in-person classes. The professors were top notch and accessible, and the program didn't break the bank. I will be starting a new job in the IT field thanks to the education I received at PPSC.
